Shockwave
Therapy.

Shockwave therapy for stubborn tendons and slow-healing tissue. Radial shockwave is an evidence-based adjunct for chronic tendinopathy and calcific injuries. We use it alongside your rehab plan when it's the right fit for your case.

When shockwave
makes sense.

Shockwave therapy (radial extracorporeal shockwave, rESWT) delivers mechanical acoustic pulses into soft tissue to stimulate the body's own healing response. For a specific set of chronic injuries, the evidence is strong and the results can be significant.

We use the BTL Easy Wave, a clinical-grade radial shockwave device used across sports medicine and physio practices. Settings are adjusted to your case.

At PRT, shockwave is always paired with active rehab. The pulses kickstart tissue remodeling. Your exercise program builds the capacity that actually gets you back to running, lifting, or training.

How it fits in

Targeted pulses

Focused acoustic pressure delivered directly to the problem tissue.

Tissue response

Stimulates local blood flow and triggers healing cascades.

Treatment course

Typically 3 to 6 weekly sessions for a complete protocol.

Paired with rehab

The mechanical stimulus is half the equation. Loading is the other half.

Evidence-based
uses.

Shockwave has strong evidence for specific conditions, and much weaker evidence for others. We offer it for the things where it actually works.

Plantar fasciitis

Chronic heel pain that hasn't responded to rehab alone.

Achilles tendinopathy

Mid-portion and insertional Achilles tendinopathy.

Patellar tendinopathy

Jumper's knee that has lasted 3+ months.

Calcific shoulder

Calcific tendinopathy of the rotator cuff.

Lateral epicondylitis

Tennis elbow that hasn't resolved with rehab.

Medial epicondylitis

Golfer's elbow, similar chronic-phase use.

Proximal hamstring

Chronic proximal hamstring tendinopathy.

Gluteal tendinopathy

Chronic lateral hip pain driven by gluteal tendinopathy.

Greater trochanteric pain

When other conservative care has plateaued.

How a session
works.

Shockwave is usually done as a short block of treatment within a broader rehab plan. First, you'll be assessed to confirm it's the right tool.

01

Assessment first

If you haven't been assessed yet, you'll book an initial with a chiropractor or physiotherapist. We confirm shockwave is the right fit before starting.

02

Your first shockwave session

The area is identified, gel applied, and the handpiece delivers focused pulses to the tissue. 15 to 20 minutes, usually uncomfortable but tolerable.

03

Course of treatment

Typically 3 to 6 sessions, one per week. Between sessions, you continue your exercise program.

04

Reassess

At the end of the block, we reassess. Most improvement shows up in the weeks after the course ends, not during it.

How shockwave
fits in.

Shockwave works when it's the right tool for the right problem and when it's paired with appropriate loading. If your issue is better served by another approach, we'll tell you.

We offer shockwave because it works for specific cases. The evidence is clear for what it treats, and we stay inside that.

Who provides this.

Shockwave therapy at PRT is offered by chiropractors and physiotherapists trained in the technique. An assessment confirms it's the right fit before any treatment starts.

Common questions.

Does it hurt?
It's uncomfortable. Most people describe it as a rapid, deep tapping that's intense at the treatment site. Intensity can be adjusted. You stay in control throughout the session.
How many sessions will I need?
Typical protocols are 3 to 6 sessions, one per week. Some conditions resolve in fewer, some need the full course. Your practitioner will give you a realistic estimate after your first session.
When will I feel better?
Most improvement shows up in the weeks after the treatment course ends, as tissue remodels. Don't judge results after session one.
Do I still need to do exercises?
Yes. Shockwave without loading doesn't build the capacity your tissue needs. Exercise is not optional. It's the other half of the protocol.
Is it covered by insurance?
Shockwave is usually billed under your practitioner's service (chiropractic or physiotherapy). Most extended health plans cover the practitioner visit. Direct billing available for most major insurers.
Who shouldn't do shockwave?
Shockwave is not used over active infections, open wounds, malignancy, pregnancy (in the treatment area), or uncontrolled bleeding disorders. Your practitioner will screen for contraindications at assessment.
